The Idoji temple stands on the about 3.5km north of Kanonji temple. If we entered the splendid Deva
gate, the precincts of a temple can be overlooked. Main temple is in the front and Daishido is in the
right-hand side.
Emperor Tenmu ordered and built this temple in 674. It is called Myohoji temple at that time and it is
said that it was a big temple. Seven Buddha Yakushi Nyorai of the principal image is told that Prince
Shotoku made. Kobo Daishi visited this ground in 815, and sculptured four bodhisattvas and dedicated.
"Furthermore, he dug the well within a night with the pilgrim's staff, projected the own image.
And he sculptured his shadow reflected in the water surface into the stone.
This stone image called "Higiri Daishi". The name of the temple originates in this.
At the age of the Kenbu and the Tensyo, the temple meet with war fire and the temple has been
burned down. After that the Awa hanshu Hachisuka Mitutaka rebuilt.
Although it is in an unexpected fire and Main temple was burned down in Showa 43, it rebuilt three
years after.
