The Maegamiji Temple was opened by the Buddhist ascetic at the beginning of the
Nara period. It is famous as the temple for which Emperor Kammu (781-806) prayed to
cure illness. The Maegamiji Temple before Meiji is located in the place of the present
Ishizuchi shrine, and prospered as the Bettoji which had many important works of Mt.
Ishizuchi. Kobo Daishi also says that he self-trained in this mountain.
By the abolish the Buddh of Meiji, the temple was moved to the present place. The
Iouji Temple which was the Matuzi was made into the amulet-issuing office, and was
named the "Maeueji" in Meiji 10. Although there is time when the name of "God" cannot
be used and the "above" was used, it came to use "God" later.
The present Maegamiji Temple is a Shingon sect Sekitetu group's head temple, and
serves as a fundamental exercise hall of Sekitetu mountaineering asceticism. All temples
were built after Meiji period and the splendid temple gate before Meiji remains in the
Ishizuchi shrine.
The inner shrine is located in the place which went down the Zyojyusha for a while.
