The Unpenji Temple is located at the Unpenji summit of the mountain, and is located in the highest
place in Shikoku holy place. From the Sankakuji Temple, there are one method of going through
Tokushima prefecture Ikeda town and the other method of going in a rope way from Kagawa prefecture
Onohara town. The precincts of the temple are surrounded by the natural forest. The view of the
Sanuki plain which is visible under its view is wonderful.
Kobo Daishi opened this temple in response to Emperor Saga's command in 872. The Sendyu Kannon
image was carved then, and it was considered as the principal image, and provided in the Shikoku
amulet-issuing office of No. 66.Then, it prospered as an exercise hall of learning, many priests gathered,
and it was called the Shikoku Kouya.
In the Tensyou age, the Tyosokabe Mototika of Tosa visited this temple, and the dream of Shikoku
unification was told to the chief priest. However, the chief priest abandoned the ambition of annexation
of Shikoku and admonished that he does his best in the production of a country of Tosa. However, the
Mototika invaded Awa and has burned almost all temples in war. His ambition was not able to be
achieved by Hideyoshi's Shikoku conquest.
Then, although the vigor of a temple declined gradually, it became the Edo period, Temple received
protection of the Awa han and became the prayer place of the Hachisuka family.
